HVAC Rentals recently assisted with high capacity chiller hire to Devonshire House, Mayfair, London which required an effective temporary cooling solution. The London chiller hire was a necessity enabling essential repair works to the building’s permanent HVAC system to take place, without compromising cooling to the building.Â
Opposite ‘The Ritz’, in London, Devonshire House is an exceptional building, renowned for its luxurious multiple offices, housing multiple tenants within the banking, finance and insurance sectors. With prestigious offices arranged over three floors, totalling approximately 3100 square feet of space, climate control is essential for the operations, functionality and upkeep of the building. Hence when a building such as this requires critical maintenance or repair works, chiller hire can be essential.
Our in-house team at HVAC Rentals carried out the full installation and commissioning of the high capacity air cooled chiller rental unit. As time was critical, the chiller hire installation was carried out within the space of 1 week.
Reason for needing chiller hire for multiple office building
Before assisting with the high capacity chiller rental unit, our consultation team firstly carried out an on site survey to the clients London building needing temporary cooling to help advise on the best options. As the building was running off of its last few remaining backup chillers, it required all of its permanent chillers replaced, which is why temporary long term cooling hire was needed. The time frame for the full replacement would be 12 months, Hence a temporary chiller rental unit was identified as the most efficient and effective temporary cooling solution. It was also essential for Devonshire House in Mayfair to continue full operations and functionality, with no disruption to its tenants.

Placement of the air cooled high capacity chiller rental –
Devonshire House set within busy Mayfair, London, is a prestigious building surrounded by iconic busy streets of London, as well as major bus routes and roads. It was not possible to place an air cooled chiller outside on ground level. Â
After assessing the building, HVAC Rentals identified a possible location on the third floor balcony for an air cooled chiller rental unit to be placed. Therefore, a structural consultant was commissioned by HVAC Rentals to fully assess the structural integrity of the balcony, ensuring the steels of the balcony were more than strong enough to take the weight of the air cooled chiller rental unit.Â
Furthermore, due to one of the client’s tenant’s wanting to carry out refurbishment on the surface of the balcony, it was important all works involved were limited in space. Therefore, HVAC Rentals organised scaffolding up the side of the building, allowing for the 50 metres worth of pipework installation to be of no disruption to the clients tenant.
Crane lift for a rental chiller in London –Â
Due to the building being in Mayfair, with major bus routes close by, also surrounded by busy streets and roads, a crane lift required multiple road closures and bus diversions. Furthermore, as the crane lift was needed out of hours and in Winter months there was a risk that even after booking the crane lift weather conditions could affect whether the chiller hire crane lift could go ahead. Scheduling with TFL can take a number of weeks and so weather on the date of the lift can be impossible to predict. This is why HVAC Rentals booked multiple dates for the chiller hire crane lift, allowing for a contingency plan just in case the first date for the crane lift could not go ahead. Â
HVAC Rentals logistics team also scheduled a very large window of time with their engineers alongside the crane lift company, ensuring to maximise chances of good weather and a successful crane lift for the chiller hire. Luckily, the first scheduled crane lift was a success.Â
Furthermore, prior to the crane lift, as advised by TFL, HVAC Rentals also organised scans of the road to be conducted along with road integrity testing. This ensured the chiller hire crane lift would be totally safe.Â
Full Chiller Hire installation – Connecting to the chilled water cooling system –
As well as supplying and installing all of the necessary pipework, risers and connections, HVAC Rentals also installed a high capacity rental plate heat exchanger (PHE) and secondary pump set. Using the plate heat exchanger ensured that the water running through the rental chiller could be kept isolated from the water already within the building’s existing HVAC system. As to ensure there was no cross mixing of the sites water systems. Hence by isolating the water ensured for only high quality new water to be used for the rental chiller, and within the newly connected chiller, and pipework. By using a rental plate heat exchanger, it also allowed the use of HVAC Rentals low pressure air cooled rental chiller to be connected to their high pressure chilled water system.Â
